Maria Bello Interview: Mentions Mariska

Maria Bello did an interview for her new show Prime Suspect. She mentions Mariska and balancing family life with her career.

So had you seen many versions of the Prime Suspect script before you signed on to this one?
No, it was the year before they asked me to do it and I didn’t do that. And then this one. Even when I got this one, I said no because I have really good friends who do these hour shows and they never see their kids. And I worked in Haiti part-time for the last few years, have an organization there, and my son is 10, and I thought, I don’t want to work fifteen hours a day and not have my life because I never consider myself an actress, right? I don’t define myself by that. There’s so many other things in my life that are part of it that I just wanted to make sure my whole life would work. But I went in and it was Pate and Alex, and they assured me that it wouldn’t take up my life and they would make it work for me, and they’ve been true to their word.

You’d been on E.R. for a season in the nineties. Was that sort of when you figured out, like, “I can’t do this, it’s too much”?
Yep, uh-huh. That was part of it. But also Mariska Hargitay and Patricia Arquette are some of my best friends, and I see what their hours have been like — not that they haven’t loved their shows or don’t love their shows, but it’s really hard being a parent, and especially with my travels in Haiti, I couldn’t figure out how to do it. But, like I’ve said, they’ve been wonderful.

Así que te había visto muchas versiones del guión principal sospechoso antes de que usted firmó un contrato para éste?

No, fue el año antes de que me pidió que lo hiciera y yo no lo hice. Y después de éste. Incluso cuando llegué a este, le dije que no porque tengo muy buenos amigos que hacen estos espectáculos horas y nunca ver a sus hijos. Y yo trabajamos en Haití a tiempo parcial para los últimos años, tener una organización allí, y mi hijo es de 10, y pensé: no quiero trabajar quince horas al día y no tener mi vida porque nunca me considero una actriz, ¿verdad? No me defino por eso. Hay tantas otras cosas en mi vida que son parte de lo que yo sólo quería asegurarme de que mi vida iba a funcionar. Pero fui y fue Pate y Alex, y me aseguró que no tomaría mi vida y que haría el trabajo por mí, y que han sido fieles a su palabra.

Sí, uh-huh. Eso fue parte de ella. Pero también Mariska Hargitay y Patricia Arquette son algunos de mis mejores amigos, y veo lo que sus horas de haber sido - no es que no haber amado sus programas o no amar a sus espectáculos, pero es muy difícil ser un padre, y especialmente con mis viajes en Haití, no pude encontrar la manera de hacerlo. Pero, como he dicho, han sido maravillosos.
